Trail with local ties could receive national recognition

May  19, 2014

A trail well-known by local walkers, bikers, and hikers could be recognized nationally.

A new bill has been introduced in Congress that calls for making the American Discovery Trail a part of the National Trails System, a network of trails across the country.  The American Discovery Trail is 6,800 miles long and connects Delaware with California. It passes through Joliet, LaSalle, Davenport, Muscatine, and Cedar Rapids.

If it receives national designation, the trail would officially become America's first coast-to-coast trail.  U.S. Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois is sponsoring the bill along with Senator Chris Coons from Delaware. They believe national recognition would help pay for signs along the trail and encourage tourism.
