Support Local Authors

November  29, 2013

Two stores in the Quad Cities will join the national observance Saturday of Small Business Saturday - an effort to promote locally-owned stores and businesses for holiday shopping. With his wife, Bob Applegate owns the Book Rack used book stores in Davenport and Moline. And as part of their emphasis on buying locally, he says they've made a special effort to promote local authors.

"We now have 50 local authors that we have on the shelf in our store, in a dedicated section for local authors. It's a natural extension of that to try to help promote them and small local business."

And some of those local authors will be at each of the two Book Racks on Saturday to talk with shoppers, sign their books, and promote reading.

"We have some very talented authors in the Quad Cities and hopefully people will take the opportunity to look at their books and maybe pick up a couple and give them a try. I don't think they'll be disappointed."

Despite the competition from online booksellers like Amazon, and e-books, Applegate says his business has been growing in the six years since he and his wife took over - growing from one store, to two. And with about 60,000 books in each.

Participating local authors tomorrow will include Ann Boaden, Sean Leary, Bill Hannan, Karin Youngberg, Cindy McDermott, and Robin Throne.
