St. Patrick's Day in the QC
March 14, 2013
For the 28th year, the Irish and Irish at heart will celebrate their patron saint this weekend. The Saint Patrick Society of the Quad Cities will sponsor its annual parade Saturday plus other events in honor of Saint Patrick's Day.
Co-Chair Julie Walton says the parade will include many of the clans and other organizations from past years, plus a new participant called Q-C Air.
"They are the Quad Cities Alliance for Immigrants and Refugees and I believe they intend to march with flags from nations that represent all the immigrant communities that helped begin our community."
Walton says this will be the first year that one of the founders of the parade, John Scally, has not been the chairman.
"He felt that 27 years was enough and he'd like to be able to enjoy the parade as a spectator and a participant, either walking or riding with someone."
The weekend celebration begins Friday with the annual Gathering of the Clan Luncheon at the River Center in Davenport beginning at 11 am. The parade starts Saturday at 11:30 and will be followed by the Post Parade Bash at 1, also at the River Center.
The only interstate St. Patrick's Day parade in the country starts in downtown Rock Island on 23rd Street between 4th and 5th Avenues, crosses the Centennial Bridge, and goes through downtown Davenport to the Irish Memorial at 2nd and Harrison Streets.
Walton says this year the parade will have nearly 90 entrants including 25 clans.
