Silvis Joins Main Street Program

February  28, 2014

A new effort is starting to re-vitalize downtown Silvis. Today during a ceremony at city hall, Illinois Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon officially welcomed Silvis to the state's Main Street Program.

Second ward alderman, Kathy Hall, who's also a member of the Main Street Board, says it's helped many other cities in Illinois and across the country.

"We get guidance, training, and sharing from all the other Main Street organizations. So if it works in one community, they'll share it with the others."

The downtown is First Avenue, also Route 84, from First to 17th Streets.

No state funding is  involved - money will come from the city, businesses, and fund-raising by the Main Street board. Although committees have not yet been organized, Hall believes projects to improve downtown Silvis will include landscaping, incentives to fix up building facades, and recruiting tenants for vacant buildings.
