Rocky on Parade
February 11, 2013
The mascot for Western Illinois University will appear throughout Macomb next fall. "Rocky on Parade" is a public art project featuring life-size fiberglass bulldogs, decorated by local artists.
Art professor Bill Howard came up with the idea, and says it's modelled after "Cows on Parade" in Chicago, and a university in Georgia that held a similar event for its mascot. He's looking for 12 to 15 sponsors for the fiberglass bulldogs, and has invited 400 artists in western Illinois to submit proposals. The winning designs will be unveiled in October during the annual Town and Gown Celebration.
Howard says money from the sponsorship fees will pay for the statues, a plaque for each one, a small stipend for the artists, and money for art student scholarships. Already ten sponsors have signed up.
