Physicians Perform in Concert

September  20, 2013

Local physicians will administer a heavy dose of music this weekend. The 4th Annual Genesis Doctors in Recital will be held Sunday at Centennial Hall at Augustana College.

Debra Hughes from the Genesis Foundation says 35 Genesis physicians and employees will perform a wide variety of music, from classical to contemporary.

"You think of physicians in a doctor's office or in a hospital," said Hughes. "But they have so much talent outside of their profession. And I think they're just going to sit and be entertained and amazed."

Performers include family physician Steven Strom, endocrinologist Kathleen Figaro, and The Treble with Men barbershop quartet. Some performers will be able to play a Vladimir Horowitz Steinway Concert Grand Piano provided by Steinway and Sons.

Proceeds from the event will go toward music therapy programs and hospice care. Hughes has seen first-hand the benefits of music in the lives of patients.

"She was in hospice and she just loved teh music the therapist would play," said Hughes. "And she would also sing, and it would just bring her back to life. She was humming to the tune, and she was even singing."

The 4th Annual Doctors in Recital will be held at Centennial Hall at Augustana College, Sunday at 2 p.m. A meet and greet with the musicians will be held at Gendler's Wine and Spirits following the performance. Sponsors include Augustana College, West Music, and the Genesis Foundation.
