2013 Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival

June  04, 2013

Traditional jazz musicians from across the country will come to the Quad Cities this summer. The 42nd Annual Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival will celebrate the life and music of the jazz legend starting August 1st.

Bix Memorial Society Vice President, Joe Heffe, said he's very excited about this year's lineup.

"Randy Sandke, who's been to the festival a number of times," said Heffe. "Dan Levinson. Obviously Josh Duffee from the Quad Cities and His Graystone Monarchs will be there. A couple of really neat addition this year, Cicile McLorin Salvant is a jazz vocalist in the style of Billie Holiday. So that's going to be a terrific addition for us, something new. And also, we have a special guest star, Johnny Crawford, who's a jazz vocalist who does the Whiteman and Goldkette libraries. And you might remember him as Mark McCain from "The Rifleman" series."

Heffe says this festival stands out from others because it sticks to its roots.

"Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Festival is really one of the last festivals that focuses on traditional jazz from the 20's and 30's," said Heffe. "While all the bands play a variety of music, each band always brings in a number of songs or charts from either Bix direct library or from the Bix era, just to keep that tradition alive."

Along with performances by jazz artists, Quad Cities Social Dancing will host workshops teaching the popular dances of the 1920s and 30s.

The 42nd Annual Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival will be held August 1st through the 4th in Davenport. A list of bands and the schedule is posted on the Bix Society website. (www.bixsociety.org)
