Arsenal Island Furloughs Begin in July
May 30, 2013
After months of uncertainty, many civilian workers on Arsenal Island finally know when their furlough days will start. Yesterday the Army announced employees will take 11 unpaid days off from work starting in mid-July.
Kathi Szymanski, chief counsel for the Army Sustainment Command, says each command was allowed to work out a schedule with its unions. And for the ASC, Joint Munitions Command, Army Contracting Command, and the Arsenal Garrison, the furloughs will be on 11 consecutive Fridays through the end of September.
An estimeated 4,000 workers on Arsenal Island will be affected.
And as bad as 11 unpaid days will be, Szymanski says originally, before sequestration took effect in March, the Army and Department of Defense said their civilian workers would have to take 22 furlough days, starting in April.
