Alcoa Contract Vote
June 05, 2014
Some workers in the Quad Cities and several other states may soon have a new contract. Friday members of the United Steelworkers Union will vote on a tentative agreement reached last month with Alcoa.
Brad Greve, vice president of Local 1-0-5 which represents hourly employees at the Davenport Works, calls the 5-year agreement a "fair contract."
"It has raises in every year of the contract, our benefit premiums will stay the same throughout the contract as they are today, and our benefit package is staying the same as it is today."
Union leaders are recommending approval. Workers will also receive a 1,000 dollar signing bonus late next month.
If it's approved, the new contract would cover nearly 18-hundred workers at the Alcoa plant in Riverdale, and a total of 5,000 across the country. Greve says final results should be available late Friday night. Members of Local 105 can vote from 5 am until 7:30 pm at Scott Community College. Also at the college, the union will hold several meetings to explain its provisions - at 6:30 and 7:30 am, plus 1:30, 3:30, and 6:30 pm.
