24-hour online giving campaign for area nonprofits

May  05, 2014

The web is a powerful tool for giving. That's what the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque wants local residents to know. And beginning at midnight tonight, the foundation will launch its first Great Give Day, a 24-hour online fundraising campaign for local nonprofits.

Spokeswoman Hillary Baker says 53 nonprofits, from the environment to breast cancer awareness, will participate in the event. And she thinks the campaign is a good way for small organizations to build excitement for their causes while raising money using a new way.

"In a broader sense, it's just a great way to build community and to put the focus on nonprofits and giving, and to let people know you don't have to be wealthy to be a philanthropist."

Baker says if everyone in northeast Iowa gives at least $10, the foundation will raise $1.4 million. Other participating cities have raised over $14 million in a single day.  And she hopes bonus prizes and matching pledges will keep the momentum going throughout the day.
