Niabi Zoo is celebrating one of Coal Valley's newest residents. Director Lee Jackson says last month, a 16-year-old Eastern Black and White Colobus monkey gave birth to a male, named Katavi. He's about six weeks old now.
The monkeys are usually found in the woodlands of tropical Africa. Shirati is his mother's name, and his father, Tuli, is 12-years-old.
Like all Black and White Colobus monkeys, Katavi was completely white when he was born. It'll take about three months for his fur to change colors.
Niabi Zoo currently has nine colobus monkeys. And Jackson says they're an important part of North America's breeding population. The zoo works with other zoos as part of a species survival program.
Niabi Zoo will open for the season on April 13th.
