Traffic on one of Davenport's busiest streets may be reduced thanks to the completion of the Veterans Memorial Parkway. Friday afternoon, city officials will hold a ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of the final section of the 3.7 mile new road.
City Engineer Brian Schadt says Veterans Memorial Parkway runs parallel to 53rd Street, and goes from 65th at Brady Street, east to the city border at Utica Ridge Road.
"This provides another east-west corridor through the north side of the city. And it connects existing neighborhoods as well as opens up areas for potential development."
The last section to be completed connects Jersey Ridge with Elmore Avenue, a distance of 3/4 of a mile. It cost 6.4 million dollars, bringing the total cost to 32 million - with 80 per cent of the cost coming from the state and federal governments, and 20 per cent from the city of Davenport.
Veterans Memorial Parkway also features the city's first intersection with a "roundabout," instead of traffic lights, to control traffic.
The ribbon cutting will be held at 4 pm.
