Extensive vandalism occurred on the campus of Augustana College on Thursday, Feb. 22, school officials announced late Friday.

In an email sent to students and staff, the Dean of Students Office wrote that graffiti inside Carlsson Evald Hall on Seventh Avenue in Rock Island included racial slurs and symbols, and a message "suggesting an act of violence against the college." The graffiti had been removed as of Friday, the college says.

The Rock Island Police Department is conducting a criminal investigation. The college says they currently do not have any suspects.

Campus police say they will take increased security measures by conducting extra patrols and locking all campus buildings at 4:30 p.m. while the college is on spring break.

Students were on spring break during the week of the vandalism, and will remain on break until March 5.

The college is asking people with any information regarding the vandalism to contact the Rock Island Police Department at 309-732-2677 or Augustana Public Safety at 309-794-7711.
