'Talking Art' With Mikey Loy

Mikey Loy is the guitarist and lead vocalist for the local indie/rock band The Penny Serfs.

They just released their second album, Politics in the Time of Heroin on January 26. An earlier album, Like Eating Glass, was released in 2015.

The band writes their music and records between touring nationally and internationally with other groups, most notably The National, for whom they work behind the scenes as music technicians. The National recently won the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.

Originally from Port Byron, Ill., Mikey Loy now lives in Le Claire, Iowa. He's restoring an old building that once served both as a one room schoolhouse and as a church at 204 N. 2nd Street in Le Claire. When completed, the renovated structure will serve as a recording studio.

The Penny Serfs have a concert scheduled for April 25 at the Triple Crown Whiskey Bar & Raccoon Motel in Davenport.

Produced by Lacy Scarmana
