SouthPark Unveiling

WVIK Staff

SouthPark Mall shoppers can now enjoy free wi-fi, comfortable seating, and a new children's area. Today in Moline, the mall owner, Macerich, cut a ribbon to celebrate the renovation of the 40 year old mall.

SouthPark Marketing Manager, Aleshia Chiesa, says the company remodeled with new paint, lighting, couches, fireplaces, and televisions. Outside, crews installed new signs and lights, and fixed up the parking lots. But, she says they're not done.

Dick's Sporting Goods is building a store where the food court used to be. Last spring, it was demolished along with the Sears store. Chiesa says Macerich hopes the renovations will attract more retailers and restaurants.

A new feature at SouthPark Mall is a farm-themed kids' play area in front of J. C. Penney, with a place for parents to relax.

All of SouthPark's entrances have also been remodeled. But, the mall is waiting for state approval of a new entry road, with direct access from John Deere Road.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
