RICO Board of Health to Vote on Layoffs, Program Cuts

Rock Island County Health Department

A vote Thursday night could lead to a reduction in health programs and layoffs in Rock Island County. At 5:30, the Board of Health plans to decide what action to take as a result of Illinois' state budget impasse.

The proposed plan would lay off 17 health department employees and affect programs such as breast and cervical cancer screenings, lead protection, and health tracking of children in foster care.

The Rock Island County Health Department has not received state funding for these and other programs since last July.

At the meeting, the Board of Health will also discuss a lawsuit it's filed against the state of Illinois. Along with about 60 other agencies in the state, the department is suing the state for not providing the funding promised for a variety of programs.
