Public Utility's Lawsuit Blames Farming for Water Pollution

Should farming continue to be exempt from the Clean Water Act? That's a major question being debated in Iowa and the Midwest due to a court case. Last spring, the Des Moines Water Works filed a complaint against three counties, asking a federal judge to make agriculture subject to the same rules and penalties as factories.

On today's WVIK News Focus, Michelle O'Neill reports the main problem is nitrogen in fertilizer, which turns into nitrate and runs off into streams and rivers.

Officially, Michelle's title for 28 years was WVIK News Editor. She did everything there is to do in the newsroom and whatever was needed around the radio station. She also served as Acting News Director from September 2023 - January 2024.
