Plans for a New Bridge

Illinois Department of Transportation

An old bridge across the Mississippi River between Iowa and Illinois will soon be replaced. Wednesday, the Illinois Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing and open house on its plans to build a new bridge that'll carry US 52 between Sabula, Iowa and Savanna, Illinois.

Becky Maruffo, from the Illinois DOT, says the current bridge is 82 years old.

The bridge is currently used by about 22-hundred vehicles a day, and is very narrow.

Marruffo says plans now call for bids to be let next summer, with construction starting in 20-16 - about 100 feet downstream. After completion the following year (2017), the old bridge will be demolished in 2018.

The total cost of the project is 78 million dollars.
The open house on Wednesday in Savanna will be held at Saint John the Baptist Church, from 1 to 6 pm.
