Phase 1 to Begin on Rock Island Co. Justice Center Annex

This week, construction workers will start getting ready to build an annex to the Rock Island County Justice Center.

Summary

Parking will not be allowed on the north side of the building or between the justice center and the courthouse.

Dick Fisher, Chair of the county Public Building Commission, says fencing will be installed around the construction site. Then in a couple of weeks, site work will begin. It will include the foundation, demolishing the parking lot, caissons, and concrete walls.

Employees and visitors should use the new parking lots on the south side of Third Avenue, right across the street from the Rock Island County Courthouse, justice center, and jail.

The annex will add 46,000 square feet to the justice center for the State's Attorney's office, court administration, and the Circuit Clerk's office. There also will be space for the sheriff's department to hold suspects. And a  walkway will be built for transferring them between courtrooms and the jail.

Last year, the Rock Island County Board approved a $28 million bond sale to pay for the new, three-story annex.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
