New Bettendorf Fire Chief

City of Bettendorf

Bettendorf has a new fire chief. Friday the city announced the promotion of Assistant Chief Steve Knorrek to the position of fire chief. He's served as acting chief since last April when Gerry Voelliger retired.

A press release from City Administrator Decker Ploehn says city officials decided to hire from within their department instead of conducting a national search.

Knorrek joined the Bettendorf Fire Department in 1983, and since then he's held a variety of positions, including fire inspector, fire investigator, and personnel manager.

The city council will vote on his appointment next week (11/20), and a swearing in ceremony is scheduled for December 4th.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
