More Layoffs Next Month at Deere Factories

John Deere

John Deere has announced more layoffs at two eastern Iowa plants, including one in the Quad Cities. Spokesman Ken Golden says 115 workers in Waterloo will be laid off, effective September 23rd and in Davenport, a week later.

A union shop chairman told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier the layoffs came as no surprise. On Friday, Deere announced its 10th quarter in a row of year-over-year earnings declines. In the third quarter, equipment sales dropped eleven percent. The company cited the continuing downturn in the farm and construction equipment markets.

Golden says 870 people work at the Davenport factory making construction equipment, and employment at the tractor plant is 2,930.

Early next month, Deere will also lay off 120 workers at the Harvester Works in East Moline.
