Paintings by some of the best-known artists will visit the Quad Cities later this year. For three months, beginning in October, the Figge Art Museum in Davenport will host "French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850-1950."

Figge executive director, Tim Schiffer, says the 60 works come from the collection of the Brooklyn Museum in New York.

"It includes some of the most well-known impressionists - Monet, Cezanne, Renoir, and Degas. But it also includes earlier works starting with French academic painting and going all the way up through Matisse to the modernists of the 20th century."

Funding for the exhibition comes from a group of local residents.

"They were so excited by the idea of bringing these artists that everybody knows to the Quad Cities that they got together and got 40 gifts of $25,000 each, so we have a million dollar endowment, the income from which will fund this exhibition and an exhibition every other year going forward."

In addition, about 30 partners organizations will put on special programs in conjunction with the exhibition, including colleges, libraries, Ballet Quad Cities, and the Quad City Symphony Orchestra.

"French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850-1950" opens October 6 through January 6.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
