Moline Foundation Celebrates 65 Years

The Moline Foundation is celebrating its 65th anniversary. Wednesday it honored 22 local businesses that gave money to set up the foundation in 1953, and 15 non-profits that were its first grant recipients.

President and CEO Joy Boruff says it now has assets totalling 22 million dollars.

"If you and your spouse want to support public education, or just education in general, we can establish a fund for that. We can also accept gifts through estate planning."

The foundation also can establish endowments and administer scholarship programs.

Boruff says it also awards grants from donations to its community impact program. And earlier this year it took over running the Career Cruising program that's in 53 schools in Scott and Rock Island counties.

"We have the software development and career exploration program in every middle and high school in the two county area."

The Moline Foundation now has a full-time staff of four, but had been run only by volunteers until she was hired 18 years ago to be the first paid staff person.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
