Despite the challenges of falling state support, Western Illinois University has ambitious plans for the future. On Tuesday, President Jack Thomas outlined his strategic plan during meetings in Macomb and the Quad Cities.
One of his key goals is to stabilize enrollment, and then begin attracting more students. One way he'll do that is by offering dual-credit classes.
"In fall 2017, WIU began providing general education, college level English, to Cambridge High School seniors. Today, in fiscal year 2018, dual enrollment programs are under consideration for six additional Illinois high schools."
He also plans to expand the curriculum, by adding majors at the two campuses and online.
"And now is the time for students to apply and enroll in these programs. Effective fall 2018, students will be able to complete online degrees in law enforcement and justice administration, fire science, economics, and accountancy."
Doctor Thomas says his continuing goal is for WIU to be "the leading public, regional university, providing educational quality, opportunity, and affordability."
