Local Option on the Ballot Again ?

One year after its defeat, a sales tax for school facilities in Rock Island County may be on the ballot again. This month, school boards will consider asking voters again in the spring for a 1 per cent sales tax.

Tonight both the Moline and United Township school boards will consider trying again after the proposal failed last March 56 to 44 per cent.
Moline Superintendent David Moyer says the districts still needs additional revenue for repairs, renovation, construction, and life safety.

Doctor Moyer says the newest building in the district is Bicentennial School, and it's 38 years old. The high school dates back to 1960, and two other buildings are more than 100 years old.

The Rock Island school board will discuss a possible referendum Tuesday night.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
