Liggins Trial Ends In Mistrial

Jeff Reinitz/Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier

The murder retrial of Stanley Liggins has ended in Waterloo with no verdict. Monday afternoon Scott County Judge Marlita Greve declared a mistrial after the jury reported it could not agree on a verdict after about three days of deliberations.

Liggins was being tried for the third time for the 1990 killing of nine-year-old Jennifer Lewis from Rock Island. Her body was found behind an elementary school in Davenport.

Liggins had been convicted in his two previous trials but both convictions were thrown out by appelate courts.

Scott County Attorney Mike Walton says Liggins will remain in jail. Liggins will likely eventually face a fourth trial, time and place to be determined.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
