Homeless Shelter In Need of Heat

Christian Care

A Rock Island homeless shelter needs help to pay for a new furnace. On Thursday, Christian Care began asking for donations to replace a rooftop heating and cooling unit that stopped working, leaving its men's dormitory without heat.

The 15 year old unit is one of three at the building on 3rd Ave., and will cost $7,000 to replace.

Outreach Coordinator Pam Hauman says Christian Care doesn't have any money set aside to pay for a large repair.

"Especially not at this time of year, when we're ending our fiscal year. So any money that we have from fundraising events from earlier in the year has already been designated for other things."

Hauman says the situation helps her understand what it's like to be homeless.

"We're not any different than the people who come to us for services.  We're in a situation where we don't have the money, and that's what brings a lot of people to our door."

Christian Care has ordered a new unit, which Hauman says should arrive in a few days. Donations may be mailed to PO Box 4176, Rock Island, IL 61204-4176 or dropped off at the Rescue Mission at 2209 3rd Ave.

I am currently a senior at Augustana College, majoring in Multimedia Journalism and Mass Communication with a minor in Creative Writing. I serve as the General Manager for WAUG.fm, Augustana's online student radio station and have worked as an intern and DJ at Studstill Media Group. I report on local news for WVIK and am honored and excited to be a part of the news team. I hope to pursue a career in radio broadcasting and an eventual master's degree in English or Communications.
