Group Tries to Save Rock Island County Courthouse

Preservationists have not given up on trying to block demolition of the Rock Island County courthouse. Monday afternoon, the group announced it has sent 58 letters to developers and others who might have an interest in the courthouse. That's despite the county board's decision to demolish the 120-year-old building, which is located at the foot of Centennial Bridge in Rock Island.

Randall Brockway discusses the history of the courthouse and a letter the group sent to potential buyers and developers.

Architect, Randall Brockway, says the board has not explored all its options, including trying to find a private party to buy it to redevelop.

Rock Island County Board member, Rich Morthland, voted against demolishing the courthouse. At the end of the press conference, he lead the group in a chant, shouting, "Save our courthouse!"

An annex to the Rock Island County Justice Center is currently under construction. The three-story building will include four courtrooms, the circuit clerk, state's attorney, other offices, and secure areas for suspects.

The $28 million project should be completed before the end of the year. That's when demolition is set to begin on the existing courthouse.
