Galena Derailment Update

Cleanup continues at the site of a trail derailment near Galena in northwestern Illinois. Federal, state, and local agencies are working with the BNSF Railway to monitor and cleanup where tank cars carrying crude oil went off the track, and caught fire, last Thursday (3/5).

According to the US EPA, the last fire was put out Sunday morning, and trains were expected to start running on the tracks again today. And the agency also says, so far, samples from the nearby Galena River, and the air around the site, show no oil contamination.
U.S. EPA has directed BNSF to develop a soil screening and sampling plan for the cleanup and restoration of the affected soil on both sides of the track.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
