The Davenport Library will hold a dress give-away at one of its branches this weekend.
Librarian Stephanie Spraggon says she came up with the idea after cleaning out her own closet and wondering who might need to get a free, formal dress. So she contacted some school guidance counselors and they assured her there are a lot of girls who don't have the hundreds of dollars it costs to buy a dress, that they may only wear once.
"I don't want a dress to be a barrier for someone not to be able to go to a dance."
So Spraggon asked for donations, and they came in, hundreds so far, and they're still coming in. From size zero up to 20, short, long, with straps and without, large puffy ones, lots of sequins and glitter, and some with the tags still on them.
"It was fun to go through them and see all the different sizes and styles. There's literally something for everyone."
The dress give-away will be held at the Fairmount Branch of the Davenport Library on Saturday from 10 am until 4 pm. First come, first served.
