Debut of the Pallas Cat

Niabi Zoo

Two new species will make their debut this weekend when the Niabi Zoo opens for the season - the Pallas Cat  and Yellow-backed Duiker.

The Pallas Cat is native to central Asia, living anywhere from grassland to high altitude mountainous areas. It's also known for its grumpy look and long fur. The Yellow-backed Duiker is similar to an antelope, and lives in the forests of  central and western Africa.

Both are considered "near threatened" due to hunting and habitat loss.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
