Country Style Expanding

The Quad Cities "other" well-known brand of ice cream is expanding. Thursday afternoon, Country Style will open its fifth store - in Davenport at Utica Ridge Road and 53rd Street.

Store owner, Cristina Sanchez-Lopez, says the landlord was looking for an ice cream store to replace one that had been there in the past.

"Country Style used to be off of 18th Street and 53rd which is currently Crust Pizza. And I figured that it's such a close location, that it was close enough to where we were before and also we kind of created a brand over there on the Iowa side."

The company was founded in the Quad Cities in 1947 by Wayne Lindgren and sold to Kent Kindelsperger in 1988.

For Sanchez-Lopez, this will be her third store, the others are in Davenport and East Moline. With the new store she'll have about 22 full-time and part-time employees.

A ribbon cutting is set for 4:30 Thursday afternoon.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
