Costco Coming to QC

Work will begin soon to build a new Costco Wholesale store in Davenport. The project has won all the re-zoning and approvals it needs from the city, and it could open by the end of the year.

Representing the company locally was the N-A-I Ruhl Commercial Company. Vice president Chris Wilkins says the site is along East 53rd Street at Fairhaven Road. One of the concerns for neighbors is additional traffic for the already busy Elmore Avenuet shopping area. The entrances and exits for the new Costco will all be on 53rd Street.

"The topography of the site was such that it wasn't feasible to come up with a second, what you might call a back entrance. We tried through some neighboring property owners to come up with some adjacent access points to alleviate that traffic on 53rd, but it just wasn't feasible."

The 18 acre site was part of a family farm, and Wilkins says demolition of the buildings on the property will begin soon.

Costco plans to build a store with more than 156,000 square feet, a gas station, and parking lot, with completion expected late this year.

After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
