Centennial Bridge will Reopen Soon

WVIK Staff

The long nightmare for local motorists will soon be over. Today, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced the Centennial Bridge will re-open on Sunday (10/19).

Project engineer John Wegmeyer says the repairs and renovations are nearly complete.

By Sunday, the contractor will be done, but more work will be required next year - that work will include some lane closures only, not the whole bridge again.

Some work can't be done until next spring.

The Centennial Bridge, connecting Rock Island with Davenport, closed at the beginning of August and was only scheduled to be closed for one month, but additional problems forced the closure to continue an additional month and-a-half.

Wegmeyer says he does not yet have an exact time for the re-opening, it'll be sometime Sunday afternoon.

After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
