Centennial Bridge in retrospect

Centennial Bridge re-opened two days ago, and one local official is satisfied the Illinois DOT and contractors did the best job they could.

Planning Director for the Bi-State Regional Commission, Gena McCullough, says the month-long maintenance and repair project suffered from several delays. And the agencies could not have anticipated the problems that caused the extra six-week closure.

And McCullough thinks Bi-State and the DOT did a good job getting the word out about the bridge closure and delays on the project.

Daily traffic between Davenport and Rock Island on the bridge averages 30,000 vehicles. But there's no way to know how many drivers took the official detour to the I-280 bridge.

A spokesman from the Rock Island Arsenal Garrison says the agency did not count traffic on Government Bridge while Centennial was closed.

Some minor construction on Centennial Bridge and I-74 has been delayed until spring, but McCullough says both will remain open during those projects.
