An Augustana College student died Monday night in a bicycle accident that occurred in Holland, Michigan, according to authorities.
Yen Ngo, an 18-year-old freshman from Hanoi, Vietnam, was riding her bicycle through the intersection of a city street and a U.S. highway when a pickup truck fatally struck her, according to the Holland Department of Public Safety.
Life-saving efforts were attempted at the scene, police said.
Augustana College officials said Ngo was in Michigan visiting a friend during the college's winter break, which had just begun.
Several staff members were on campus Tuesday to provide emotional support to students who were grieving the loss, the college said.
Witnesses of the accident say the driver of a '98 Ford Ranger, identified as 21-year-old Holland resident Joshua Powers, had a green light when the truck struck Ngo at 16th St. and U.S. Route 31, according to police.
A reflection ceremony for Ngo was scheduled for Tuesday at Augustana's Gerber Center.
The Augustana community is mourning the loss of a student who was killed last night in an accident while visiting a friend in Michigan. At this sad time, we are reminded that our greatest gifts are the lives of our loved ones.
