Attorneys Apply to Fill Judge Lefstein's Seat

Six lawyers have applied to fill a vacancy on the 14th Judicial Circuit, which includes Rock Island, Henry, Mercer, and Whiteside counties.

The seat will be open when Judge Lori Lefstein retires at the end of the month. The Illinois Supreme Court is asking residents to comment on the applicants to help the Justice Tom Kilbride and the other justices decide who to appoint.

The six attorneys are David Andich of Rock Island, John Doak of Rock Island, Joseph Fackel of Rock Island, Maritia Griffith of Moline, John McGehee of Moline, and Katherine Varlas Teel of Rock Island.

The high court will complete background checks on the applicants. And the Illinois State Bar association will survey all the attorneys in the 14th circuit, to find out what they think about the applicants’ integrity, temperament, legal ability, and other skills. Kilbride will also appoint a judicial screening committee to evaluate the information and make a recommendation.

Those wishing to send written comments about the applicants may address them to: Judge Appointment Comments, Fourteenth Judicial Circuit, Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts, 3101 Old Jacksonville Road, Springfield, IL 62704.

Written comments must arrive by 12 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, and should include contact information, such as name and address, preferably no more than 250 words.
