Drivers, bikers, and hikers who cross the Mississippi River on the Government Bridge should learn what to do before a road project begins next week.

Starting Monday, Fort Armstrong Avenue will be closed, along with the Rock Island Viaduct and Rock Island Drive. The Rock Island Gate to get onto the island will also be closed, but the Davenport gate will be open.

Spokesman Eric Cramer says it'll take six to eight weeks for crews to upgrade the intersection with traffic lights near the Rock Island entrance.

But he's not worried about drivers trying to use the Moline and Davenport entrances to travel between Illinois and Iowa. It'd just take too long because they would have to go through the process of checking in at the gate, show I.D. and state their destination to the guard. Cramer doesn't think very many drivers will attempt it.

Use of the Government Bridge will be restricted to traffic and drivers who have business on the island. And the Rock Island Viaduct will become a dead end.

While the road work may be inconvenient for drivers, Cramer says the American Discovery Trail will remain open. That means pedestrians and bicycle riders will be allowed to travel between Davenport and Rock Island as usual.

The road project on Arsenal Island should be completed in late May or early June.
