Late this month, a nominating commission will interview people who want a seat on the Iowa Supreme Court. The court says 19 people have applied to fill a vacancy created when Justice Daryl Hecht retired in December.
Three applicants are from the Quad Cities area:
- Scott County District Court Judge, Joel Barrows from Bettendorf
- Muscatine County Attorney, Alan Ostergren
- Attorney Jean Dickson from Bettendorf
On January 30th, the 17-member commission will narrow the field to three nominees, then forward those names to Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds. Then she'll have 30 days to appoint a new Supreme Court Justice.
Iowa residents may tell the commission what they think about the applicants before the meeting. The email address is appellate.vacancy@iowacourts.gov. And the mailing address is Iowa State Judicial Nominating Commission Secretary, 1111 E. Court Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50319.
