100 Cellos Have Arrived

WVIK Staff

Local artists will help the Quad City Symphony Orchestra raise money for music education and celebrate its 100th anniversary season. This morning, a truck delivered 100 actual, but un-finished, cellos, made in China, for a fund-raiser called "100 years, 100 cellos."

Mary Decker, one of the organizers, says her committee found 100 artists, including teachers and students. They'll "decorate" the cellos in the coming weeks, put them on display, and then the cellos will be sold at auction in May.

A few of the cellos will be auctioned on May 14th, just before world renowned cellist YoYo Ma performs with the Quad City Symphony. The rest will go up for bids at the final anniversary event May 29th.

Decker says this isn't the first time Volunteers for Symphony has organized this type event - several years ago artists decorated 14 violins for the residency by Midori, and there were 9 violins used to celebrate the 90th anniversary season.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
