WVIK’s newsroom has been recognized by the Illinois and Iowa Associated Press Broadcasters Associations for excellence in journalism.

Significantly these awards recognize work produced by students in internships at WVIK, as well as WVIK staff. The internships were funded, in part, by the Amy Helpenstell Foundation.

Illinois

Two former staff members of WVIK were honored April 25 when the Illinois Associated Press handed out its awards for Journalistic Excellence in 2008.

Alex Degman received a second place plaque in the category of Best Sports Story for his preview last July of the John Deere Classic. Alex is a graduate of Western Illinois University, and will soon earn a master's degree from the Publlic Affairs Reporting Program at the University of Illinois-Springfield.

Alex Keefe also won second place in the downstate radio contest for Best Use of Sound for a feature on the Davenport Zither Ensemble. With help from WVIK Operations Director Dave Garner, he interviewed and recorded members of the ensemble for a piece that played on National Public Radio's All Things Considered last fall (10/08).

Keefe also won first place in the Best Light Feature category for "The Little Mustard that Could" - when Boetje’s Mustard won an international tasting competition. Keefe graduated from Knox College and will soon earn his master’s degree in journalism at the Medill School, at Northwestern University.

Iowa

Three former staff members of the WVIK newsroom were honored May 1 when the Iowa Associated Press handed out its 2008 awards for Journalistic Excellence in Broadcasting.

Alex Degman placed third in the category of Spot News for large market radio stations for his feature on how Columbus Junction dealt with severe floods in June of 2008.

He also placed second in the Best Sports Story category for his preview of last year's John Deere Classic. Alex is a graduate of Western Illinois University, and will soon earn a master's degree from the Public Affairs Reporting Program at the University of Illinois-Springfield.

Emily Ford won first place in Documentary-Public Affairs for her feature story on how to buy and what to buy for a home emergency kit, following last summer's floods and windstorms. From Carman, Illinois, she graduates this spring from SIU-Carbondale with a B.A. in Radio-Television and will attend UI-Springfield in the fall for the Public Affairs Reporting Program.

Alex Keefe won two firsts - in General Reporting for his story about Boetje's Mustard winning an international tasting competition ("The Little Mustard that Could"), and in Technical Excellence, along with WVIK Operations Director Dave Garner, for a feature on the "Davenport Zither Ensemble." National Public Radio aired the Zither feature last October during All Things Considered. Keefe graduated from Knox College and will soon earn his master's degree in journalism at the Medill School, at Northwestern University.
